Service Learning
Course Reflective Narrative
SPAN 301S: Service Learning is a required class which focuses mainly on community service involvement. I served at the Martin Luther King academy school in Salinas as a third grade tutor. At the beginning of the course, various nonprofit organizations did a presentation to show what their goals are, and how they help the community. Moreover, it was very interesting to get to know all the organizations, and it was hard to choose one. I end up working with in the school because I have an affinity for education and I think that schools, being a place of wisdom—must be considered a place where college students should volunteer.
The time at Martin Luther King Academy went by really fast and I really enjoyed it. To actually see that the time spent with a kid helping him/her understand a homework assignment does not only make a difference for the student, but for the individual helping him too. Volunteering in an elementary school is really rewarding. I learn so much from all of the people at the school—students and teachers—it was a pleasure to work with extraordinary people and the future of our country.
